What we collect, and why
| What | When | Why | Kept for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Email address | You subscribe to the update list | To email you when a ranking changes | Until you unsubscribe |
| Name, email, review text | You submit a review of a host | The name and review are published; the email is used only to check you are a real person and to query the review if needed. It is never published or shared. | Until you ask us to remove it |
| Name, email, message | You use the contact form | To reply to you | 24 months |
| Hashed IP address | You submit a form or click an outbound link | Rate limiting and spam prevention. We store a one-way SHA-256 hash, never the address itself, so it cannot be read back. | 12 months |
| Browser, referring page, device type, country code |
You click a link to a hosting provider | To know which of our pages send visitors to which provider, which is how we work out what to write next. Not linked to you as a person. | 24 months |
We do not collect: your unhashed IP address, precise location, payment details, or anything about you from other websites. We do not build profiles and we do not buy or sell data.
Cookies
Two cookies. PHPSESSID holds a random session identifier used
to protect forms against cross-site request forgery, and to keep an
administrator signed in. It expires when you close your browser and contains
nothing about you. Because it is strictly necessary for the site to function,
no consent is required for it.
cur holds the currency you chose to read prices in — three letters
and nothing more — for a year. It is written only when you use the currency
selector yourself.
There are no analytics, advertising, or social cookies. Full detail on the
cookie page, which also covers the one
localStorage value the light/dark button writes.
Your approximate country
Until you choose a currency, the site works out which one to show you from your
region. That is personal data, so here is exactly what happens: we read a two-letter
country code that the CDN in front of this site adds to your request, and if there
isn't one, the region part of the Accept-Language header your browser
sends. India gives rupees, the UK pounds, the euro area euros, everywhere else US
dollars.
It is not stored. The country code is read from the request, used to pick a default, and gone when the page finishes rendering — it is never written to our database, never logged against you, and never combined with anything else. We do not run a geolocation lookup, and we do not keep your IP address in a readable form for any purpose (see below for the one hashed exception). Picking a currency yourself replaces the guess entirely.
When you click through to a hosting provider
Our outbound links carry an affiliate identifier. When you land on the provider's site, they will usually set their own cookie to record that we referred you — that is how we get paid. That cookie is set by them, on their domain, under their privacy policy, and we have no access to it. Read the provider's own policy if that matters to you; you can also visit them by typing their address directly, and nothing changes for you except that we earn nothing.
Third parties
Your browser makes no requests to any other company while reading this site. Fonts are served from our own servers specifically so that your IP address is not sent to a font CDN. We use no analytics provider, no tag manager, no embedded videos and no social widgets.
Behind the scenes, our web host stores server logs and our email provider handles list emails. Both act on our instructions only.
Your rights
Under India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023, and under the GDPR if you are in the UK or EU, you can ask us to:
- Tell you what we hold about you.
- Correct anything that is wrong.
- Delete it — including a published review, which we will remove without asking why.
- Stop emailing you, which every email also does in one click.
Email contact@hostcliff.com and we will action it within 30 days. There is nothing to pay and you do not need to give a reason.
Children
This site is for people buying web hosting and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect anything from anyone under 18. If you believe we have, email us and it will be deleted.
Security
Data is held in a database that is not reachable from the public internet. Administrator passwords are stored as hashes, never in readable form. IP addresses are hashed on the way in. We are a small operation, so we hold as little as possible — that is the main defence.
Changes
If this policy changes materially we will update the date at the top and note what changed. We will not quietly start collecting something new.
